3 mi NW of Souris in Lot 44. Formerly known as "New Bristol"[1]. Probably named for John Macgowan, early sheriff of Kings County and mill operator on Souris River . Douglas 1925 suggests for "mountain daisy" and "hill" in Scottish. School district 1865 Gowan Brae. PO Gowan Brae cl886-1913. Meacham 1880 shows McGowans Road between and Gowan Brae.

Previous home to Gowan Brae school.

George Mullaley notes also that "Fairy Hill" is in Gowan Brae. This is possibly the hill to the northeast of the present day junction of the New Zealand Road and the Souris River Road. It was once said to be home to the largest tree on the Island, larger than the Big Tree in the Glen.
